Albania’s Audacious Move: Ban On TikTok to Protect Youth put people in debate
With the firm intention to protect the Youth of Albania and restrict some negative impacts of TikTok, the Albanian government announced a year-long ban on TikTok in early 2025. This action caused by the untimely and unfortunate death of a 14-year-old boy in Tirana, which raised concern about looking into platform implications in Youth’s behavior and their safety.
What’s the story behind this debate?
The incident that has raised this debate is a story of a schoolboy stabbing, allegedly after a social media incident, which has placed a spotlight on the potential life-threatening implications of social media platforms. Prime Minister Edi Rama cited this incident as an alarming situation, emphasizing that social media, particularly TikTok, is fueling violence, bullying, and hostility among Youth and children.
TikTok denies any linkage to this incident and asserts no evidence exists. Rama counters by pointing to the more significant social media risks TikTok’s algorithm poses. He adds, “The problem is not just our children but our society’s willingness to allow these platforms to take them hostage.”
Why do people not have the same opinion about this?
Alabania’s people have different views on the ban on TikTok. Some people support it, while others oppose it. For example, parents and educators have primarily supported the decision, citing increasing concerns over violence and harassment inspired by social media. However, many students see the ban as a restriction on their freedom.
One of the citizens mentioned, “We use TikTok to share our lives and find entertainment. This ban feels like deprivation.”
Is it a Global issue?
This recent incident in Albania and the government’s reaction are not the only cases on the global stage. Many other countries are trying to protect the Youth and their people by restricting or regulating their social media use.
Countries like France, Germany, and Australia have implemented stricter regulations on platforms targeting younger users.
For example, Australia recently imposed a total social media ban for children under 16.
