Indian-American Candidates Win Big in Texas City Council Runoff Elections

The Indian-American community in Texas is celebrating a significant political milestone as two of its own secured victories in city council runoff elections held over the weekend. The results underscore the growing civic influence of the Indian diaspora in major Texan cities like Sugar Land and San Antonio.

Sanjay Singhal Wins Sugar Land District 2 Seat

Sanjay Singhal, a retired energy executive and graduate of IIT Delhi, emerged victorious in the District 2 City Council runoff race in Sugar Land, Texas. Singhal defeated fellow Indian-American candidate Nasir Hussain by a wide margin, receiving 2,346 votes compared to Hussain’s 777, according to unofficial results released by Fort Bend County.

In his post-election address, Singhal said,

“This victory belongs to the residents of District 2. I am deeply grateful for the community’s support and ready to serve with transparency and dedication.”

Singhal ran on a platform focused on transparent governance, infrastructure improvement, and enhanced community engagement.

Sukh Kaur Retains District 1 Seat in San Antonio

In San Antonio, Sukh Kaur, an education reform advocate and the first Sikh woman elected to the City Council, secured a landslide re-election victory in the District 1 runoff.

Kaur garnered 65% of the vote, defeating challenger Patty Gibbons. A nonprofit leader, Kaur resides in San Antonio with her husband and two children. Her campaign emphasized affordable housing, expanding public transit, and inclusive urban development.

Following the announcement of the results, Kaur stated:

“We really talked to the community and shared that we want to work. District 1 is about preserving our history while still moving our district forward.”

Carol McCutcheon Becomes New Mayor of Sugar Land

In a closely watched mayoral race in Sugar Land, Carol McCutcheon defeated William Ferguson to become the city’s new mayor, succeeding Joe Zimmerman.

McCutcheon, a retired reservoir engineer with a longstanding record of public service, received 6,103 votes, while Ferguson trailed with 5,402.

In her victory speech, McCutcheon said her administration will prioritize:
